Sports life is very important and very eventful in Szombathely.
Besides athletics, the traditional ball games, like soccer and basketball, also have a long tradition. Matches would attract thousands in the football and basketball season. The Adventure Park (Kalandváros) is to provide children with possibility to recreation: the little ones can try their skills on various plays and equipment. The town has a very highly developed bicycle trail system, those more daring can also ride their bikes along the trace of the former Iron Courtain.











The Rowing Lake is also an ideal place for recreation, but the Park Forest is also worth visiting. Special trails for jogging, bicyles, or tracking were established for those wishing to explore this area. With the recently renovated open-air Lake-spa (Tófürdő), with its several swimming pools , tobbogans, and other special equipment, Szombathely can also be called a spa-city.
Next to the Swimming Hall, with an area covering several acres, is the thermal spa, which in the future will be renovated in more Roman style to match the spirit of the city. Within the county there are several world-famous spas awaiting the visitors, by the way: within a 30-minute drive from Szombathely are the two spas, Bükfürdő and Sárvár. Whoever is interested in the specialties of the region, nearly all restaurants offer special dishes of the region. Foods like „dödölle”, a dish made of potatoes, flour and onions, matches perfectly the other delicacy of the region, veal stew, but even separately, sprinkled with sour cream, it is a wonderful treat for the gourmands.
